Byte-Sized Pedagogy: Practical Prompts, Principled Practice, and Pioneering Projects for AI Integration

Week 3: The AI Truth Test: Teaching students to thoroughly check AI output for accuracy.

AI models are “probability engines,” not databases, meaning they prioritize plausible-sounding language over factual accuracy. The AI Truth Test shifts students from passive consumers to active skeptics by treating AI output as a “rough draft” that requires rigorous verification. This activity builds essential information literacy skills, teaching students that their subject-matter expertise is the final authority. By identifying “hallucinations,” students learn the boundaries of generative AI and the importance of source documentation. For a “Truth Test” prompt template you can share with your students, visit our Faculty AI Resource Site sample assignments page, where you can also find new ideas and share your own AI discoveries.

Combat Fraudulent Student Activity

The college continues to face a significant challenge from fraudulent applications and fake student accounts. These bad actors exploit our systems to commit financial aid fraud, identity theft, and other crimes, posing a threat to our resources and the integrity of our institution.

To empower our faculty and staff on the front lines, a new Suspicious Account Activity Form is now available. This online form provides a single, streamlined channel for you to report potential fake students and questionable account behavior directly to the appropriate teams for investigation.

Your vigilance is our most effective tool in identifying these fraudulent accounts. Please use the new form to report students who exhibit patterns such as:

Zero Engagement: The student is enrolled but never logs into the course shell or shows no academic activity (no clicks, no submissions, no discussion posts).

Nonsensical Submissions: Discussion posts or assignments are off-topic, incoherent, or appear to be AI-generated.

Unusual Communication: Emails or messages from the student contain strange grammar, phishing-like links, or focus solely on receiving financial aid refunds without any academic context.

Information Discrepancies: The student’s name, likeness, or personal information appears inconsistent across different college systems.

How to Access the Form:

The Suspicious Account Activity Form can be found on the LCCC Portal under Faculty Staff Resources > Forms.

Protecting our college is a shared responsibility. Thank you for your partnership in safeguarding our community and ensuring our resources are dedicated to serving our legitimate students.

Faculty & Staff Spotlight: Help Students Grow with SEED??

Did you know a student with a disability who comes to college might need a little more structured transition? The SEED (Success, Engagement, Education, Determination) program available at LCCC is accepting applications for the July 2026 cohort!

As faculty and staff, you are often the first to recognize a student’s potential need for support with academic growth and independence. We are currently seeking motivated candidates for the July 2026 SEED cohort and want to inform you so you can refer students if you think this is a good fit for them.  Those who have interacted with students who have SEED support recognize the intense nature of the coaching, the assistance received in deconstructing the complex, unpacking content, and mastering the “how” of academia. With all of this intensive support, there is an additional cost for students who do “opt in” to receive the support.

The application deadline is March 20, 2026. We highly encourage students to submit their packets as soon as possible for priority review, as there is limited capacity. You can find the application at the URL here.

February 2026 – Student Employee of the Month: Alix Norton

The Career Development Center is proud to announce Alix as our Student Employee of the Month.

In her short time as a liaison in the Education department, Alix has completely transformed the Education Student Resource Center. From meticulously cataloging extensive book collections to streamlining the ECE library and front office, Alix’s organizational initiative has made the department’s resources significantly more accessible for everyone. Beyond Alix’s clerical feats, Alix has revitalized the Education suite with vibrant bulletin boards and a welcoming coffee bar, creating a professional yet inviting atmosphere for all who visit.

Alix, your dedication and “can-do” spirit have made a lasting impact on the Education department in record time. They are so proud to have you on the team.  Career Development is proud to have you as part of our student employment program. Keep up the fantastic work and continue reaching for the stars!

Our student employees are the heartbeat of our campus, and we want to hear about the incredible work they are doing! If you know a student like Alix who brings dedication, creativity, and initiative to their role, please take a moment to recognize them. Your nomination is a powerful way to celebrate their hard work and professional growth.

LASSI Lesson: Expand Self-Testing

Of the 10 LASSI measures from fall 2025 students, self-testing was highest (52.97% vs. the national norm). Self-testing means using monitoring techniques to check comprehension. Our students stated they are most comfortable with this skill.

However, their self-testing may not meet college standards. While students say they “stop periodically while reading and mentally go over or review what was said” (Q25), they do not prepare for exams by creating questions (Q15 & Q49) or review notes before the next class (Q20).

Encourage students to self-test beyond simply reviewing the materials by encouraging them to predict questions and review materials before and after class. Also, refer students needing more help to Educational Support Services.

More insights will be shared next week. If you have any questions? reach out to Michael Spinks and Katy DeLong at thelassi@lccc.edu.

Travel Tip of The Month

If you are traveling to a conference or meeting:

First – A Travel Request Form must be submitted to the Finance Office.

This form should be sent to your immediate supervisor at least 30 working days prior to the date of departure. Obtain the second signature of the Associate Dean or above and forward to Finance immediately.

Keep in mind registrations, airline tickets, and hotel reservations cannot be made on a moment’s notice.

Unsure how to complete the form? When in doubt, always reach out!

Refresh Your Wardrobe Without Spending a Dime: The Ultimate Clothing Swap

Is your closet bursting at the seams, yet you still feel like you have “nothing to wear?” We’ve all been there. Instead of hitting “add to cart” on another fast-fashion site, why not join us for a Clothing & Accessory Swap?

It’s the most sustainable (and affordable) way to overhaul your style. Bring the pieces you no longer love and trade them for “new-to-you” treasures.

Why You Should Swap

  • Total Cost: Walk away with a fresh look without touching your savings.
  • Declutter Therapy: Clear out the “maybe someday” pile and make room for items that actually fit your current lifestyle.

How It Works

  1. Clean Out: Go through your closet and pull out clothes, shoes, bags, scarves, belts, ties, jewelry, and small household decor or kitchen items you no longer wear or use.
  2. Drop Off: Bring your items to the event (ensure everything is clean and in good condition!).
  3. Browse & Take: It’s a free-for-all — take what you love! However, in order to take some things, you need to bring something!
  4. Donate: If your remaining items are not accepted as donations at the Career Development Center, please pick them up after the event.

Event Details

Let’s give these items a second life and look great doing it!

Advisors Needed for LCCC Clubs

There are currently several clubs that are seeking a faculty or staff member to serve as an advisor for their group. These groups provide opportunities for students to pursue special interests, develop interpersonal and leadership skills, meet other students, work with faculty and staff, and take advantage of learning experiences that exist outside the classroom.

The activities sponsored by student groups enrich the total educational experience and quality of campus life. As advisors, faculty, and staff members have an excellent opportunity to work with college students in a non-classroom environment, enriching student-staff/faculty interaction. We know from experience and research that this interaction has a positive effect on student retention and graduation.

The following groups are currently in need of an advisor or co-advisors:

  • Outdoors Club
  • Student Nurses Association

For more information about these clubs and more information on the responsibilities of serving as an advisor, please contact Daniel Melin at dmelin@lccc.edu.

Byte-Sized Pedagogy: Practical Prompts, Principled Practice, and Pioneering Projects for AI Integration

Week 2: The AI Study Buddy

Empower your students to take charge of their own exam prep by teaching them to transform their lecture notes into personalized practice quizzes. Take a few minutes of class to show students how to paste their notes into an AI tool and ask it to “Generate five challenging multiple-choice questions based on this text.” This activity shifts AI from a “shortcut” to a cognitive tool that reinforces active recall and helps students identify their own knowledge gaps before high-stakes assessments. Encourage them to verify every AI-generated answer against their textbook or notes to ensure accuracy and build critical oversight skills. For a copy-pasteable “Quiz Me” prompt you can share with your students, visit our Faculty AI Resource Site sample assignments page, where you can also find new ideas and share your own AI discoveries.

Special Guest Speaker to Discuss Campus Speech in Polarized Times

The Honors Scholars Program welcomes Dr. Sigal Ben-Porath to LCCC’s Schnecksville campus on Monday, March 2nd, at 2:20 pm in the Alumni Center’s rooms 107-108 to present and discuss “Campus Speech in Polarized Times.” The campus community is invited to attend along with Honors Scholars students, and copies of Ben-Porath’s books are available in the library to review prior to her visit.

Summary of Presentation: Free speech is a right promised to all Americans. Academic freedom and responsibility are special obligations of colleges. How do we ensure this in times of extreme polarization? Americans today sometimes disagree on the boundaries of speech, on the lines that we should not cross. In this talk, Sigal Ben-Porath will discuss the promise of free speech, the challenges to ensuring it, and some possible paths forward.

Dr. Sigal Ben-Porath is the MRMJJ Presidential Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania,  where she is a member of the philosophy and political science departments, and the faculty director of the SNF Paideia Program for civic dialogue. In 2025, she was elected to the National Academy of Education.  Her recent books include Cancel Wars (Chicago, 2023) and Free Speech on Campus (Penn Press, 2017). She chaired Penn’s Committee on Open Expression 2015-2019, and serves on the boards of the National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement, Middlebury’s Conflict Transformation Center, and Penn’s Project for Philosophy for the Young. In the past decade, she has been offering guidance to college campuses on policy development and responses to controversies surrounding speech.

LASSI Lesson: A Value Paradox

Among the 64 LASSI questions that LCCC students (n=511) answered last fall, two questions appear to be a “value paradox.” A large number of students reflected that “In my opinion, what is taught in my courses is not worth learning” (Q59). However, they also very highly stated that “I need a college degree to fulfill my ambitions” (Q61). One takeaway is that students are not making connections between what they are learning, the skills they are practicing in their courses, and their future career pathways.

One strategy: make these connections more explicit in courses. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) identifies eight key career-readiness competencies that are already embedded in our courses–you can highlight those.

Also, the Career Development Center helps faculty and students make these connections through daily support services and events (see a general schedule here). One can also encourage students to engage with CLAW, an “online job management system designed to empower students with essential career readiness resources.” CLAW directions are attached for sharing.

More reflections will be shared next week. If you have any questions, reach out to Michael Spinks and Katy DeLong at thelassi@lccc.edu.
