Byte-Sized Pedagogy for AI Integration
Week 6: The Bias Detective
Generative AI isn’t an objective truth-teller. It reflects the vast and often biased data it was trained on. You can help students develop critical cultural literacy by asking them to “interrogate the output”. AI often defaults to “safe” or generic tropes, providing a powerful opening for students to discuss whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced in digital spaces. By treating AI as a flawed narrator, students learn that their own diverse perspectives and lived experiences are essential for correcting the “algorithmic average.” Visit our Faculty AI Resource Site for a “Bias Audit” checklist to use in your next class discussion.

Teacher Education Faculty Present at PDE Conference
Lehigh Carbon Community College was proudly represented at the 2026 Pennsylvania Department of Education Conference, held February 25–27 in Hershey, PA, through a poster presentation highlighting the Developing Future Special Educators (DFSE) initiative.
The DFSE program is a PaTTAN-funded effort designed to inspire and prepare high school and dual-enrollment students to pursue careers in special education. Elizabeth Shope, Assistant Professor of Education and Special Project Coordinator, serves as Project Director of the initiative, which connects students to interactive workshops, professional panels, and clearly defined transfer pathways leading to certification programs at Kutztown University and East Stroudsburg University.
Shope presented alongside Stephanie Shiffert, Assistant Professor and Learning Specialist, who serves as a DFSE workshop panelist, session presenter, and collaborating faculty member. Together, they shared the workshop model, discussed participant engagement and emerging outcomes, and engaged conference attendees in meaningful dialogue about strengthening Pennsylvania’s special education workforce pipeline.
The poster emphasized both statewide urgency and local opportunity. In Pennsylvania, approximately 20–21% of K–12 students receive special education services, yet enrollment in special education preparation programs remains limited. At LCCC, nearly 300 students are enrolled in Teacher Education programs, but only 24 are pursuing the Special Education A.S. degree.
The initiative reflects strong institutional collaboration and support, with ongoing leadership and guidance from campus administration:
- Scott Aquila, Dean of Business, Legal, Education, and Institutional Effectiveness
- Kelly Trahan, Dean of the Center for Workforce Development, Online Learning, and Technology
- Megan Strella, Teacher Education Department Coordinator
The project was made possible in part through the support of the Grants Office, including Greg Bott and Nic Ziegler, Grant Writers, whose work helped secure and advance the PaTTAN funding.
Special appreciation is extended to the Office of College Relations and Marketing, including Graphic Designers Sara Turkdonmez and Mike Busch, and to Terri Houck from the Duplicating and Mail Center for their collaboration in designing and producing the conference poster.
LASSI Lesson: Anxiety Support
The higher the LASSI Anxiety Measure, the better students feel they are able to cope with the stress and anxiety related to college. Our LASSI data showed that the Fall 2025 students shared low capability to handle the stress and anxiety associated with college (43.61 vs. the national normal). In particular, the students reported worrying about flunking out of school (Q37), and they said that “worrying about doing poorly in a course interferes with my concentration” (Q56). While a degree of anxiety and stress is a good thing because it can help students stay motivated, when it stops a student from learning or attending classes, the anxiety is problematic.
Normalize that stress and anxiety related to college work are commonplace. Encourage students to build their confidence by referring them to Educational Support Services (ESS) to work with the tutors. Consider referring students to a Learning Specialist in ESS, who can help with a variety of strategies to reduce test anxiety. If a student’s stress and anxiety are extremely high, encourage them to connect with the Counseling Center & Services. Working with any of these services is a normal way to help with the stress and anxiety related to college.
Next week, more reflections will be shared. If you have any questions, please reach out to Michael Spinks and Katy DeLong at thelassi@lccc.edu.
