Middle States Monthly Update

In December, working groups submitted preliminary drafts of the Self-Study Report to the steering committee. During the mid-month debrief, the steering committee and working groups remarked on the report’s significant progress, especially as attendees of the annual MSCHE conference brought back valuable examples and effective strategies from peer institutions. Discussions focused on embedding, scoring, and streamlining evidence to avoid redundancy throughout the report. Additionally, ALO Larissa Verta and Tri-Chair Betsy Swope announced the formation of the LCCC Middle States Committee, tasked with maintaining oversight of MSCHE standards and integrating accreditation into LCCC’s strategic plan.

At their January meeting, the Steering Committee assessed progress on each standard and continued to carefully analyze the supporting evidence. The committee discussed the risks of overwhelming the report with excessive documentation and considered establishing a supplemental evidence folder, while also expressing concern over supplying contradictory evidence in the SSR. Tri-Chairs Betsy Swope, Jennifer Myskowski, and Melanie Turrano provided updates after thoroughly reviewing and refining the preliminary draft over winter break.

In March, the Tri-Chairs will return the drafts to the groups and will present an overall update on the report to the Board of Trustees. The working groups are expected to complete the final preliminary draft by May, enabling the Tri-Chairs to review, update, and refine the report throughout the summer.

Byte-Sized Pedagogy Practical Prompts, Principled Practice, and Pioneering Projects for AI Integration

Week 4: The Industry Standard

As we continue to integrate AI into the professional world, “acceptable use” is no longer a guess; it is being clearly defined by industry and academic leaders. This week, we encourage you to investigate the specific AI guidelines published by your discipline’s primary professional organizations or leading research journals. Sharing these “real-world” standards with your students helps demystify what is considered ethical AI use and what is considered professional misconduct in their future careers. Consider aligning your classroom policies with these external benchmarks to provide students with a clear, career-ready framework for when to lean on AI and when to rely solely on their own expertise.

You can find a sample in-class “Professional Standards” discussion guide on our Faculty AI Resource Google Site – Sample Assignments.

New Form: College Relations & Student Life Giveaway Request Form

The Office of College Relations is excited to announce a more efficient way for departments to request promotional items and “swag” for campus events!

To ensure we can support your needs and manage our inventory effectively, please use the new College Relations & Student Life Giveaway Request Form for all future requests. This streamlined process helps our team capture essential details like your target audience and event goals to ensure you have exactly what you need to make your event a success.

How it Works:

  • Submit Early: Please submit your request as soon as your event details are finalized.
  • Provide Details: Tell us about your intended audience (current students, prospective students, etc.) so we can provide the most relevant and impactful items.
  • Follow Up: Once submitted, our team will review the details and coordinate the next steps with you directly.

Combat Fraudulent Student Activity

The college continues to face a significant challenge from fraudulent applications and fake student accounts. These bad actors exploit our systems to commit financial aid fraud, identity theft, and other crimes, posing a threat to our resources and the integrity of our institution.

To empower our faculty and staff on the front lines, a new Suspicious Account Activity Form is now available. This online form provides a single, streamlined channel for you to report potential fake students and questionable account behavior directly to the appropriate teams for investigation.

Your vigilance is our most effective tool in identifying these fraudulent accounts. Please use the new form to report students who exhibit patterns such as:

Zero Engagement: The student is enrolled but never logs into the course shell or shows no academic activity (no clicks, no submissions, no discussion posts).

Nonsensical Submissions: Discussion posts or assignments are off-topic, incoherent, or appear to be AI-generated.

Unusual Communication: Emails or messages from the student contain strange grammar, phishing-like links, or focus solely on receiving financial aid refunds without any academic context.

Information Discrepancies: The student’s name, likeness, or personal information appears inconsistent across different college systems.

How to Access the Form:

The Suspicious Account Activity Form can be found on the LCCC Portal under Faculty Staff Resources > Forms.

Protecting our college is a shared responsibility. Thank you for your partnership in safeguarding our community and ensuring our resources are dedicated to serving our legitimate students.

Refresh Your Wardrobe Without Spending a Dime: The Ultimate Clothing Swap

Is your closet bursting at the seams, yet you still feel like you have “nothing to wear?” We’ve all been there. Instead of hitting “add to cart” on another fast-fashion site, why not join us for a Clothing & Accessory Swap?

It’s the most sustainable (and affordable) way to overhaul your style. Bring the pieces you no longer love and trade them for “new-to-you” treasures.

Why You Should Swap

  • Total Cost: Walk away with a fresh look without touching your savings.
  • Declutter Therapy: Clear out the “maybe someday” pile and make room for items that actually fit your current lifestyle.

How It Works

  1. Clean Out: Go through your closet and pull out clothes, shoes, bags, scarves, belts, ties, jewelry, and small household decor or kitchen items you no longer wear or use.
  2. Drop Off: Bring your items to the event (ensure everything is clean and in good condition!).
  3. Browse & Take: It’s a free-for-all — take what you love! However, in order to take some things, you need to bring something!
  4. Donate: If your remaining items are not accepted as donations at the Career Development Center, please pick them up after the event.

Event Details

Let’s give these items a second life and look great doing it!
