The Donley Center
Classes are leveled to meet student learning needs. Instruction is designed to help students improve reading and math skills for the workplace, as well as to pass the Official GED Examination. Students in these programs will explore career paths, job readiness skills, and on-the-job skills for high priority occupations in the Lehigh Valley.
To enroll, students must complete a placement test and an application. Students who are work-ready and are referred by their CareerLink Case Manager will be given priority in starting classes. Class sessions are offered during the day and in the evening.
Placement Testing will resume in June 2012 for summer and fall classes.
Adult Basic Education and Pre GED (Workforce Education and Basic Skills)
Students receive support in basic reading, writing, and math skills using typical workplace contexts. Students will develop long term work and education goals after spending time completing career interest surveys and learning more about different types of jobs. These course also helps students make the transition to the GED Preparation class.
GED Preparation
Students gain the skills necessary to successfully pass the GED test. This class is for high level students who need to review and practice all 5 subject areas of the GED test: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. This class also helps prepare students for their goals beyond the GED by giving support in transitioning into a career or into post-secondary education or training.
Mathematics for the GED
Class content focuses on problem solving using basic math operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, pre-algebra, and basic geometry. Recommendations for enrollment are through the GED placement test or a consultation with the Official GED Test Administrator. Course fee is $89 (textbook is included).
GED Preparation in Spanish
Prepare to take the GED test in Spanish and prepare for success. Instruction will be given in Spanish and will cover all areas of the GED test: writing, reading, math, social studies, and science. Course fee is $289 (textbook is included).
Work Keys© to Success
Sharpen your skills for success in today's workplace using the KeyTrain© system to assess and remediate areas for development in Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Math for the workplace. Students who successfully complete the program receive a National Career Readiness Certificate. Course fee is $225.
Ramp It Up Math
Get the help you need to find and keep a job that requires basic math skills or refresh your skills to take college placement tests. This class covers basic math computation skills, math problem solving, pre-algebra, and basic geometry. Class work will include specific workplace applications and use of the KeyTrain© on-line system. Course fee is $175.
Locating Information
This customized course is designed to supplement KeyTrain© remediation for Locating Information, helping students improve their scores on the Work Keys© assessment. Locating Information has proven to be the most difficult for improvements as compared to Applied Math and Reading for Information. Course fee is $99.
Noncredit Spanish for Spanish Speakers
This noncredit class is designed for individuals who are native speakers of Spanish to improve their basic reading and writing skills in Spanish. Increase your workplace marketability by developing bilingual skills for reading and writing. The class also will help students get ready for GED Prep in Spanish program. Course fee is $119.
Volunteer as a Tutor in the Career Pathways GED Program
Help adult students build their reading, writing, math, and language skills. Tutors are needed to work with students at least 3 hours per week. In order to participate, you must attend a tutor orientation and attend periodic training sessions. To be eligible to serve as a tutor, you must have a Bachelor’s Degree or be working towards one.
