Strong reading, writing, and communication skills open doors—in everyday life, at work, and in the classroom. Our Literacy and Language courses are designed to help you grow in all these areas. Whether you’re learning English as a second language, strengthening basic literacy, or preparing for academic success, we offer supportive, goal-focused programs to meet your needs.
Literacy Courses
English as a Second Language (ESL)
LCCC strives to meet the needs of English language learners in our community by offering both credit and non-credit ESL courses. Each program is designed to help you develop English language skills to prepare you for life, college, and career goals.
The General Educational Development Test, or GED, is a high school equivalency exam. It is made up of four subject tests that, once passed, earn you the equivalent of a high school diploma.
LCCC offers GED courses to help you prepare to pass the GED exam. Classes are leveled to meet your learning needs and address the four subjects found on the GED test:
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Science
- Social Studies
Our classes are designed to help you improve the skills that will benefit you during the GED exam as well as in the workplace.
Classes are offered during the day and evenings. To be eligible for these courses, you should be able to speak, read, and write in English.
Please note that classes are in high demand, and there is typically a two- to three-month wait. We invite students on a first-come, first-served basis.
Joining an LCCC GED Class
- Complete a GED Student Information Form
- Check your email for an invitation to join (usually a two- to three-month wait; if you have not received an email from LCCC after three months, please contact ged-esl@lccc.edu)
- Once an invitation is received, call or email us to register for your orientation
If eligible, you will be invited by email to testing and orientation when the next session begins. Mandatory testing and orientation are one to two weeks before classes start.

Language Courses
Beginning Conversational French
Think you need multiple classes to understand beginner French? Discover how easy learning simple words and phrases for leisure and business can be. The Beginning Conversational French course makes pronunciation simple, with phonetic spellings for every word and phrase you need to learn French. This online course even includes audio so that you can hear and practice the language with little more than a click of your mouse! You will also learn cultural tips in each lesson that will make you more comfortable in a foreign setting. The skills you obtain will not only allow you to carry on a French conversation with ease but become prepared to speak French in a wide variety of settings and situations.
Upon successful course completion, you will know useful basic French that you can confidently use when traveling. You will also understand important tips to help you blend in with and relate to foreign cultures. You will be amazed at how easy it is to speak a new language!

Whether you want to learn conversational Japanese for travel or just for fun, you’ll find this course makes it easy and enjoyable for beginners to master the essentials of the Japanese language.
Throughout this course, you’ll gain cultural knowledge and learn useful conversational phrases and vocabulary words particular to a specific area of travel. You’ll practice these in drills, interactive exercises, and dialogues. In each lesson, you’ll find helpful audio aids and Japanese words written in the English alphabet. This technique will allow you to bypass one of the biggest obstacles for most beginners of Japanese: the letter system. By the end of this course, you’ll have acquired basic conversational skills that enable you to travel around the country easily, and you’ll have discovered the heart of Japan!

Discover Sign Language will teach you how to sign basic phrases and complete sentences and how to put it all together, allowing you to introduce yourself and start a conversation. Along the way, you will learn signs for colors, numbers, locations, family, and the activities you like to do.
Discover Sign Language II will teach you how build phrases and sentences with vocabulary learned in Discover Sign Language 1, as well as learning new vocabulary. You will practice phrases and sentences by recording your own signing and uploading it for the instructor and classmates to review. You will also continue to explore Deaf culture by learning about the history of Deaf culture in the United States and technological implications on the modern-day Deaf community.

This dynamic course will teach you how to express yourself comfortably in Italian. You’ll learn practical, everyday words. You’ll read, hear, and practice dialogues based on typical situations that you’re likely to encounter if you plan to vacation in Italy. The dialogues and follow-up exercises of each lesson will teach you to communicate in Italian in a wide variety of settings. You’ll be surprised by how quickly and easily you can learn many useful expressions in Italian! This course will make it simple to master your pronunciation of Italian. Essential words and phrases are written phonetically by using sounds that are familiar to you from English words. The audio feature lets you hear the words and phrases spoken aloud with just a click of your mouse. Short exercises are included with each lesson to help you reinforce what you’ve learned and gauge your progress, making it easy to pinpoint areas that you still need to review. The exercises also give you immediate feedback—you’ll know whether you answered correctly as soon as you finish.

Speed Spanish
Imagine yourself speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Now you can with Speed Spanish! This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn Spanish pronto. Speed Spanish II
