Summary

The Facilities/Grounds Attendant, under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities and Operations, assist with the maintenance of the college’s facilities, buildings, grounds and equipment across all sites.

Work involves having a working knowledge and experience in the methods, materials, tools, hazards, and safety practices of the following trades:  general groundskeeping, custodial, and assisting the dayshift maintenance crew in many different trades.

Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is reviewed upon completion for adherence to standards, completeness and quality by a technical, professional or administrative supervisor.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Practices safety in all aspects of job and on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for special events setups and moving office furniture across all sites.
  • Works closely with the operations and maintenance office to make sure offsite work requests are completed properly and in a time manner.
  • Removes trash and recycling and cleans all Main campus entryways of debris daily.
  • Performing general routine cleaning and sanitizing of a custodial nature as assigned but not limited to cleaning bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, windows, spills clean up, and assisting with the overall cleanliness of the college.
  • Perform general maintenance repairs and projects scheduled by the immediate supervisor across all sites.
  • Performing grounds maintenance such as mowing lawns, trimming bushes and replacing exterior light bulbs.
  • Troubleshoot problems and issues reported by staff, faculty, and administration at the College.
  • Maintaining vehicles, tools and equipment required to perform the role effectively.
  • Assists the carpenter, plumber, HVAC technician and/or electrician with routine maintenance issues.
  • Assists with grounds maintenance, which includes the safe use and maintenance of power mowers, tractor mowers and other maintenance equipment.
  • Snow and ice removal on walkways and parking areas including proper operational techniques of shoveling, snowblower, and other snow removal equipment. This is a priority.
  • Following a maintenance schedule to ensure that all routine tasks are completed.
  • Unloads cleaning supplies and stocks custodial supply closet(s).
  • Maintains inventory of supplies in assigned area.
  • Assists with distributing packages, equipment and supplies (including U.S. Mail and Ups) to other departments across the college.
  • Be available to work Saturdays and overtime when needed.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required:

Education:

  • High school degree or equivalent.

 

Certifications:

  • Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)
  • Valid PA Driver’s license.

 

Work Experience:

  • At least one year of experience in general maintenance, cleaning or groundskeeping.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Understand the proper methods of mixing chemical supplies as per the Workers and Community Right-to-Know Act.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to safely operate custodial equipment such as vacuum, scrubbing and buffer machines.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to safely operate equipment used for grounds work such as mowers and trimmers.
  • Ability to work and think independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible work schedule to include overtime as needed, subject to change for summer cleaning and snow removal.
  • Reliable means of transportation, especially during bad weather conditions.

     Recommended Soft Skills:

  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with students, the public, and coworkers.
  • Must have excellent communication and organizational skills. Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: teamwork/cooperation, initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge

 

Preferred:

  • Three years of experience in general maintenance.
  • Bilingual (Spanish)

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms.  Must have the physical strength to lift a minimum of 35-50 pounds.  Physical strength and ability to bend, stoop, stretch, push, pull, crawl, climb and shovel.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to tolerate exposure to cleaning chemicals. May be occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. Must also be able to tolerate exposure to and working in freezing, subfreezing, and hot/humid temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
