Summary

The Director of Student Experience is responsible for the overall design and coordination of strategies to guide and support students in their academic journey.  This role facilitates initiatives to support student enrollment, enhance persistence and retention, strengthen student engagement, and promote academic, career, and transfer outcomes.  The Director engages others throughout the college to develop coordinated strategies to support students’ entry and transition to college; promote academic preparedness, success and recovery; coordinate tutors and tutoring services,  promote engagement in student life, academic/career development activities; and actively assist students as they work through a pathway of academic, transfer, and career readiness pathways. The Director is responsible for the assessment of student outcomes and engagement, using data to drive continuous improvement.

Reports to the Dean of Academic Support and Success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the overall design of programs and services for all students to support, enhance their persistence and retention, strengthen their engagement, and promote pathways to goal completion.
  • Collaboratively engage others throughout the college including academic advising, career development, transfer advising, Workforce Development, academic deans and faculty, learning support services, student life, and members of the enrollment management team to develop and coordinate focused strategies to support students’ entry and transition to college; promote academic preparedness, success and recovery; promote engagement in student life, academic/career development activities; and actively assist students as they as they work through a pathway of academic and career readiness achievement toward goal completion.
  • Plan and implement first year programming for students at main campus and all college sites. Some examples include common first year reading program, new student orientation, advising, and registration (NSOAR), new student convocation, parent orientation, Summer Bridge, first year seminar, etc. Communicate and collaborate with college community on the re-establishment of Summer Bridge programming.
  • Develop and promote programming and advising pathways that align students’ academic goals with career interests and transfer objectives. Work with Workforce Development and Career Development to establish experiential learning experiences for students to expose them to regional employers through internships, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships to assist them in the development of job training/skill development.
  • Serve on college committees such as Enrollment Management Team and other committees as assigned.
  • Select, train, and supervise Peer Mentors to assist with new student entry and student experience initiatives, as assigned.
  • Coordinate tutors and tutoring services to support student success.
  • Collaborate with Academic Deans and faculty for each School on the further development, implementation and outcomes assessment of first year and all student success courses. Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Life, Directors of Intramurals and Recreation, and Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engagement to develop and implement all student engagement activities.
  • Collect data and assess first-year student outcomes. Develop and provide data reports to college constituencies for further analysis and recommendations for improvements. Coordinate planning and implementation of improvements to achieve desired persistence, retention and completion goals.
  • Manage budget for the Student Experience Program.
  • Assist in providing professional development opportunities for college faculty and staff about the unique issues facing first-year and first-generation students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Psychology, Education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

 

Certifications:

  • Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)

 

Work Experience:

  • Three (3) years of demonstrated work experience in higher education related to implementation and assessment of student success initiatives,
  • Demonstrated experience working with FYE, Summer Bridge, Tutoring, Academic Transfer, and Workforce Readiness.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge and skills in establishing rapport with a diverse student population, problem solving, making connections to resources, and empowering students to achieve their educational goals.
  • Must have excellent communication and organizational skills, understanding of academic processes, ability to learn and use administrative software, and ability to interact positively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: teamwork/cooperation, initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge.

 

Preferred:

  • Spanish bi-lingual
  • Work experience at a community college preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
