Three Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) students in health care have received $1,500 scholarships from Dr. James and Penny Pantano for the spring semester. Pantano scholarships are awarded to students from Lehigh, Carbon and Schuylkill counties who show academic promise and demonstrate community involvement.
Wendy Strock, of Weatherly, Pa., is a student in the practical nursing program. She juggles school work with a full-time position at J&J Construction. Active in the Lehighton community, Strock has volunteered with her local fire company and as co-leader of a Girl Scout troop and participated in fundraisers to support the Ronald McDonald House and the local hospital.
Alexandra VanNorden, of Macungie, Pa., is a student in the occupational therapy assistant program. She works at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital and has participated in numerous mission trips, including to assist homeless people in Philadelphia, in Jamaica where she helped to build a community center and teach elementary school children, and a trip planned for this summer to Guatemala to help at an orphanage there. She and her therapy dog also volunteer at Good Shepherd.
Yadira Rosada, of Whitehall, Pa., is a nursing student at LCCC. She works as a certified nursing assistant at the Lehigh Health Network Hospice, where she cares for people during the last stages of illness and during the dying process. She has worked with hospice patients for the past 13 years and when she completes the nursing program, plans to return to work as a hospice RN.
The three students attended a private luncheon recently with Dr. and Mrs. Pantano, as well as LCCC president Dr. Ann D. Bieber.
