Lehigh Carbon Community College

Schnecksville, Pa., Nov. 14, 2025 – Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) is empowering skilled workers and building direct pathways to employment through a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. Together, they’re hosting a free Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Micro-Course at the college November 19, designed to train workers for in-demand, high-tech jobs in fiber optic installation and repair.

The course is a four-hour training combining classroom instruction and hands-on learning. Demonstrations include splicing, connector, and testing. Amazon then connects these learners to fiber-broadband employers. The course is open to anyone interested in entering the fiber optic industry and
learning this specialized skill.

Fiber optic cables are the backbone of the modern world, carrying internet, TV, and telephone data. Because they’re made up of tiny glass tubes, repairing and testing them requires specialized training. These skills are increasingly essential to build the networks powering 5G, cloud infrastructure, and data centers. AWS has partnered with Sumitomo Electric Lightwave to host free Fusion Splicing Certificate Courses at colleges across the United States.

This free course is part of Amazon’s $20 billion planned investment in Pennsylvania to build multiple AI and cloud computing data center campuses. This commitment, described as the largest private sector investment in the state's history, is expected to create at least 1,250 new high-skilled jobs and support thousands more in the supply chain. Beyond job creation, Amazon will implement workforce development programs—including specialized data center technician training—and launch the $250,000 Amazon Northeastern Pennsylvania Community Fund to support local initiatives in STEM, sustainability, and well-being.
