LCCC Hosts Support Event for Puerto Rican Families Relocating to Area
published Monday, November 20, 2017
To support families arriving from Puerto Rico and coordinate services they may need to access, Lehigh Carbon Community College will host a Support for Families from Puerto Rico event from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 14, at the college’s Donley Center, 718 West Hamilton Street in downtown Allentown. The goal is to help families transition to the community and to help them establish their home here.
The college and community partners will provide resources and referrals for families from Puerto Rico who are coming to live in Lehigh County or who have already relocated as a result of the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Maria. Information will be available not only for families, but also community members who need to make referrals to agencies in support of the Puerto Rican families who are relocating, including educators, health care workers, nonprofit agencies, etc.
LCCC faculty and staff will be available to address how to transfer to and enroll in the college. Representatives from the English as a Second Language and GED high school equivalency programs, as well as short-term job training, will also be on hand to answer questions about participating in those programs.
Community partners from social service agencies, hospitals and other nonprofits will provide resources on accessing health care services for children, transportation, food, shelter and more.
It is free to participate or attend. Spanish speakers will be available.
