Lehigh Carbon Community College Readies for Commencement Ceremonies on May 14

Schnecksville, Pa., May 13 –Lehigh Carbon Community College holds its 47th spring commencement on Wednesday, May 14, in two ceremonies, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., in Berrier Hall on its main campus in Schnecksville, Pa. More than 400 students are expected to participate. Interim college president, Dr. Ann Bieber, will preside at both ceremonies.

In keeping with tradition, student speakers were selected from nominations submitted by the graduating class and faculty members. General studies major, Philip Wetzel of Zionsville, Pa., will present remarks at 6 p.m. Humanities and arts major, Victoria Dikeman of Emmaus, Pa., will present remarks at the 8 p.m. ceremony.

Speaking at both ceremonies is Caitlin Brown, a psychology major at Lehigh Carbon, who was recently named a member of the 2013-2014 All-PA Academic Team, which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society for two-year colleges), the Coca Cola Corporation, the State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.

Also an Honors Scholar Program student at LCCC, Brown served as the recording secretary for the college’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and is a member of Psi Beta, the national honor society for Psychology majors. She was instrumental in the production of the international V-Day Movement at LCCC in the spring of 2013, raising awareness and funds to end violence against women and girls around the world. Brown’s research paper was also selected for the Beacon Competition, a regional conference for research by students at two-year institutions. Brown plans to continue her education at West Chester University this fall, majoring in Women’s Studies.

President of the LCCC Faculty Association, associate professor of social sciences, Creed Hyatt, will present the Student of the Year, to be announced at the ceremony.
