Credit for Prior Learning
Lehigh Carbon Community College believes that college equivalent learning takes place in many different environments. The learning could have occurred away from a college classroom through on-the-job experience, professional workshops, technical and business schools, military, volunteer training, or hobbies. There are a number of options which can be used to convert prior learning into college credit. The Director of Prior Learning and Credentialing coordinates the program of credit for lifelong learning.

Credit for Life Learning Experience
The student who can document previous learning compiles a portfolio, which is an organized folder of information about specific past experiences and accomplishments. It documents that the student's skills, experience, and learning are equivalent to those that other students have gained through the traditional classroom format. Each completed portfolio is assessed by the appropriate LCCC faculty member(s). Students interested in compiling a portfolio for evaluation should contact the Prior Learning and Credentialing Office for more information.

Challenge Examinations
Those students who cannot fully document their previous learning in a portfolio can request credit by examination for LCCC courses. These examinations are developed by LCCC faculty members. This option is available for a limited number of courses for which portfolio development is not appropriate, standardized examinations are not available, and a challenge examination has been developed.

Credit for Military Experience
Veterans can have previous military experience and/or USAFI courses evaluated for transfer credit. The college evaluates previous military training in accordance with the recommendations of the American Council on Education through the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Forces. Validated records of training programs or military courses must be submitted to begin this process. For more information click here.

Standardized Examinations
Standardized tests measure a person's knowledge of the material covered in introductory college courses. The standardized testing program is an option for individuals who have had learning experiences in a non-formal setting.

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a national program of credit by examination. There are two types of CLEP examination: General and Subject. The general tests assess knowledge usually acquired through the first two years of college work. The subject tests assess knowledge in specific college courses.

The ACT-Proficiency Examination Program (PEP) is a standardized national program. It offers examination in liberal arts, business, and technical areas.

The Defense Activity For Non-traditional Education Support Program (DANTES) is also a standardized subject test offered in various college and technical subjects. The tests cover material usually taught in one-semester or one-year post-secondary courses.

Advanced Placement
The college participates in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Under this program, the College grants credit and advanced placement to students with completed college-level courses in approved secondary schools with a score of three or better in the Advanced Placement Tests of the CEEB. Applicants for credit for advanced placement should request the CEEB to send their scores to the Enrollment Services Office.

Credit for Business-related Noncollegiate Courses
The college recognizes credit recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE) for courses offered by noncollegiate organizations. These courses are offered by professional societies, federal agencies, industries, and labor unions.
