Medical Transcriptionist Certificate
This program prepares students for positions as medical transcriptionists in doctors' offices or health care facilities.
Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
- keyboard and format all forms of business correspondence.
- keyboard a minimum of 50 lines per hour of machine dictated medical reports.
- apply correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules tomachine-dictated medical letters and reports as well as longhand,rough-draft sources, or electronic sources of business correspondence.
- understand medical terminology and technology as it is usedin doctors' office, hospitals, other medical facilities, and relatedindustries.
- apply procedures learned for handling communications, mail,processing internal and external communications (traditional andelectronic), telephone calls, arranging for a meeting, usingtransportation or communication services, using financial services, andutilizing the appropriate information systems in a business/medicalenvironment.
- understand the scope of the administrative management ofrecords progressing from establishing a records management system tofiling, storing, retrieving and disposing of records in paper, image,and electronic form.
- communicate with doctors, supervisors, and other personnel in an employment facility to provide effective workflow.
- work individually and collaboratively to meet goals and objectives in a timely manner.
- participate in professional associations.
Student planning on pursuing the Health Information Technologyor Medical Assistant A.A.S. after completion of the certificate programare urged to meet with an advisor when selecting courses.

*Placement testing is available for AOT 112, AOT 113, AOT 114, AOT 115, AOT 116, AOT 117, AOT 118 (Keyboarding/Typing sequence).
AOT 115: Typing I may be subsitituted for AOT 112, 113, & 114.
AOT 118: Typing II may be substituted for AOT 117 & 118.
Recommended electives: HIT 110, 120, 250, 255, or MED 216.
Some courses may be used toward the Medical Assistant or Health Information Technology A.A.S. degree.
