Human Services Certificate

Human Services workers assist individuals, families and groups to improve the overall quality of life in the community.

This program prepares graduates for employment as providers of bothdirect and indirect client services, to address the quality of directservices, and to improve accessibility, collaboration, coordination andcommunication among professionals and agencies. Graduates are employedas human services workers or case workers in a variety of settings,including offices, clinics, hospitals, group homes, correctionalcenters, government agencies, day treatment centers, shelteredworkshops, extended care facilities and detoxification centersthroughout the community.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of LaborStatistics, human services is projected to be among the fastest growingoccupations between 1998 and 2008.

The Human Services Program is a member of the National Organization for Human Services Education (NOHSE).

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  • assist in planning and utilizing critical thinking and problemsolving skills to assess the needs of individuals, families, and groupswithin the community.
  • assist in goal planning using the appropriate strategies, services or interventions.
  • assist in identifying plans and implementing a treatment planusing appropriate resources, specialized assistance and communitysupports to achieve the desired outcome.
  • with assistance, formulate a systematic method to evaluate the outcome of services and make referrals as appropriate.
  • discuss the interaction of human systems, includingindividuals, families, groups, and communities, within the society andenvironment.
  • describe the effect of one's own values and beliefs in the role of the human services worker.
  • demonstrate collaboration and cooperation with a variety of healthcare providers and agencies.

For continuation in the program, the student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.20 and earn a "C" or better grade in all human services and other courses required for the Certificate in Human Services.
