COMMUNICATION A.A.

This program is designed for students who have a special interest in entering a communication field, such as professional writing, communication studies, or broadcast communications. Such fields might be in journalism; publishing; marketing and sales; radio; television; and counseling. Therefore, students can choose from four separate concentrations: Communication Arts, Digital Media, Professional Writing, and Speech Communication. While some students may pursue the program of study for personal enrichment rather than transfer, the degree is designed for students preparing to enter a program leading to a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university.

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  • communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • recognize the importance of effective communication in business, industry, and academia.
  • demonstrate understanding of the effects of diversity in communication.
  • explain contemporary communication theories.
  • identify and use the various modes of persuasion.
  • produce professional documents using desktop publishing software.
  • analyze accuracy and fairness in print and broadcast media.
  • discern the quality and validity of sources on the Internet.

Recommended Mathematics elective: MAT 120, 150.

Some four-year colleges and universities require two semesters of science, mathematics, and foreign language. Students should consult the catalog of the transfer institution to ensure that degree requirements are being properly met.

Students who plan to transfer are urged to consult an academic advisor or counselor to ensure that the courses they select meet LCCC requirements and those of the four-year college or university. Students should choose a concentration and select the communication concentration electives from the list that corresponds to that concentration.
