Beginning Fall 2008, Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) will be offering Geographic Information Systems (GIS) courses including Introduction to Geospatial Technology, Geographic Information Systems and Application based training in GIS.

Geographic Information Science has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor and Industry as a key emerging and evolving industry with numerous opportunities as a career path.

GIS can be described as a database tool to store, organize, retrieve, and analyze geographical and resource data for decision making in many fields of industry including law enforcement, environmental management, business, defense and intelligence, education, government, transportation, public safety, health and agriculture to name a few.

Major companies such as Levi Strauss & Co. and Lamar Advertising Company use GIS technology to determine everything from where to locate new retail stores to where to better locate client billboards to target various population densities.

Examples of how GIS is used in everyday life include internet maps such as MapQuest (http://www.mapquest.com/), as well as Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/), where one can access any place on earth at the click of a button. The technology is also used in GPS systems that are becoming standard in many new cars today.
