Children of the Carbon and Schuylkill County SHINE (Schools andHomes in Education) program will participate in the eighth annualnational "Lights-On"
after-school celebration at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the gymnasium at Panther Valley High School, Route 209, Lansford.
Representing six school districts, the children have prepared aspecial presentation. More than 7,500 sites across the nation willcelebrate to send the message that the key to children's success is tokeep the lights on and doors open after school.
In addition, Sen. James Rhoades will read a senate resolution,stating that Oct. 18, 2007, is "Lights-On Day" in Pennsylvania tocelebrate the importance of quality
after-school programs.
Following the program, milk and cookies will be served.
The SHINE program provides pre-kindergarten through fourth grade children a
jump-start in reading and mathematics.
