Students in the "Professional Presentations" course (CMN 112) atLehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) presented live via Second Lifeto 75 educators in the State University of New York (SUNY) system onDec. 7.
LCCC students held a one-hour panel session, in which they offeredtheir honest opinions about the use of Second Life in the collegeclassroom.
Launched in 2003 by San Francisco-based Linden Lab, Second Life isan online virtual world in which users represent themselves withself-created animated characters, known as "avatars."
LCCC is one of the first colleges in the world to use Second Lifefor educational purposes, thanks to Instructor of English BethRitter-Guth who teaches classes in Second Life and developed"Literature Alive!", an area on Second Life that offers open access toliterature.
The students' discussion followed a one-hour presentation byRitter-Guth on the development of "Literature Alive!" and thechallenges faced by community colleges.
A new course in LCCC's Communications program, "ProfessionalPresentations" focuses on using the most cutting-edge technologies todeliver professional presentations. As part of the course, students areprovided the opportunity to deliver a presentation to professionals.
