The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened the nominations processfor the largest scholarships available to students and recent alumnifrom community colleges, including Lehigh Carbon Community College(LCCC).
Through the initiative, called the Undergraduate TransferScholarship Program, the private foundation will award up to $30,000annually per recipient to help students and recent alumni fromcommunity and two-year institutions pursue four-year degrees at anyaccredited college or university in the United States and abroad. Lastyear, the Foundation received more than 700 nominations for theseawards.
While 45 percent of all college students in the United States attendcommunity colleges, few private funds are available to help topcommunity college students transfer to
four-year institutions, inspite of their high levels of ability and need. The Jack Kent CookeFoundation scholarships can provide funding for tuition, room andboard, required fees, and books for the length of the undergraduatedegree, generally two years. Each award can total up to $30,000annually, although the amounts will vary based on such factors as thecost of the institution each recipient attends.
The foundation plans to award approximately 50 scholarships throughthis program in spring 2008. It will renew awards each year based uponstudent performance. Current students are eligible, as are alumni whoearned a degree from a community or two-year institution since spring2003 and have not since transferred to a four-year college. Allcandidates for the scholarship must be nominated by the facultyrepresentative at their community or two-year institution.
