The Board of Trustees of Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) has approved the appointments of the following faculty members.
Maryjane M. Albeck of Emmaus has been named anInstructor-Learning Specialist at LCCC's Carbon and Morgan centers. Shehad previously contributed to student success and retention at LCCC forfour years as a learning specialist/counselor for the TRIO program. Herresponsibilities included academic support, academic advisement, andtransfer/career counseling. In addition, she presented workshops andplanned orientations, banquets, cultural trips, social events, andhonor society induction ceremonies. Before that, she was aninstructional aide, providing academic support for special educationstudents in Southern Lehigh School District. She earned a B.A. inPsychology at Wells College, Aurora, N.Y., and an M.S. at SyracuseUniversity.
Samuel K. Benner Jr., CPA, of Walnutport has beenappointed an Assistant Professor of Accounting. He has taught a varietyof classes—including accounting, finance, and management—for more than10 years at local colleges such as Cedar Crest and Muhlenberg. Beforethat, he spent 20 years in industry with responsibilities that includedaccounting and finance, human resources and benefits administration,management information systems, and risk management. He was a vicepresident of finance for a privately held manufacturer and worked forlarge multinational companies and a certified public accounting firmthat provided small to midsize clients with accounting, tax, andconsulting services. Benner earned a Bachelor of Science in BusinessAdministration-Accounting at Kutztown University and a Master ofScience in Business Administration-Management at Wilkes University.
Gail A. Cummings, RN, of Schnecksville has beenappointed an Instructor of Psychiatric Nursing. For the past fouryears, she has been a part-time and special-term nursing faculty memberat LCCC. She has 29 years of experience, having served as a schoolnurse in Parkland School District, in the critical care division atLehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network, and in thehematology/oncology unit at Hahnemann University Hospital,Philadelphia. Cummings earned an A.A.S. in Nursing from NorthamptonCommunity College and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at KutztownUniversity, where she was a member of the Nursing Honor Society andgraduated magna cum laude. She plans to complete a Master of Science inNursing-Clinical Nurse Specialist at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh,in 2008.
Marlene ("Miriam") G. Harris-Botzum of Orefield has beennamed an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. She had been an adjunctinstructor at LCCC in 2002 and 2003, teaching both on campus and onlinevia LCCC's Virtual College program. She previously also held teachingpositions at DeVry University, Fort Washington, Pa.; Warren CountyCommunity College, Washington, N.J.; and Cedar Crest College, and hadserved as a lecturer at Kutztown University. She earned a B.S. inMathematics at the University of Akron, Ohio, in 1990 and an M.Ph. andM.A. in Mathematics, with a concentration in Mathematical Logic andParameterized Complexity Theory, at George Washington University,Washington, D.C., in 2002.
Yishen Lai of Allentown has been named an Instructorof Chinese/English as a Second Language (ESL). An adjunct facultymember at LCCC since 2006, she developed two Chinese language coursesthat are now part of LCCC's curriculum. After graduating from BeijingLanguage Institute in 1983, Lai was a lecturer of English at TsinghuaUniversity, China, for six years. She earned a master's degree inEnglish Language Teaching at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom,in 1986. She has taught Chinese to both adults and children in U.S.language schools since 1995 and has also served as a Chinese/Englishinterpreter.
