Job Title: PT Advisor - Northern Tier Centers

Work Schedule: Flexible, 26 hours per week,
Monday/Thursday 12:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday/Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (flexibility on these days)

Annual Salary: $12-$20 per hour

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Summary

The Academic Advisor works from a developmental framework, assessing students' needs and assisting them with a broad array of academic and career related issues at our northern tier centers. The Academic Advisor provides direct assistance to students, advocates and provides leadership for the development of advising initiatives that will enhance student success, and collaborates with colleagues to strengthen the effectiveness of advising services throughout the institution. The Academic Advisor also assists with the development of prevention and intervention strategies for students in academic difficulty. Position reports directly to the Director of Advising and Counseling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a resource and advocate for a caseload of students on academic, career, and transfer issues, and assists them in becoming self-directed in the educational planning process.
  • Assesses individual student's stages of development (academic, career and personal) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental steps that will assist individuals in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals, directing students to alternate majors/options where appropriate.
  • Refers students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for academic, personal, and career counseling; academic skills development; financial aid; and any other area that may appropriately assist the student in achieving his/her academic objectives.
  • Works with students who test into developmental courses by providing guidance in accordance with the student's interests, values and abilities.
  • Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to the student's program of study.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited institution required. Advising or other experience in a community college setting preferred. Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication and public speaking. Individual should be creative and resourceful and have experience working as part of a team and establishing collaborative relationships. Familiarity with and commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
